Thoughtful Third Thursday: April 2014

I’m in the middle of re-reading Sunshine by Robin McKinley.  So far, it’s just as good as I remembered.  🙂

I’m going to tell you, right up front, this book is about vampires.  Not sparkly, moody, teen vampires – these suckers (hee, hee) are scary, other worldly, ancient monsters.  Yes, there is sexual tension between one vampire and our heroine, but this is by no means a romance novel.

Maybe it’s because I just binge read THG trilogy, but I keep drawing parallels between those books and Sunshine.  The main character, Rae, is a baker (like my beloved Peeta), who lives through a harrowing experience and has to deal with the fallout (like Katniss).  I don’t know, maybe it’s because they’re both fairly dark, compared to my usual reading material.

I put my still-wet clothes in a sinkful of more soap and water.  Tomorrow I would put them through a washing machine.  I might throw them out anyway, or burn them.  (I still hadn’t burned the cranberry-red dress.  It lived at the back of my closet.  I think I knew I wasn’t going to burn it after the night I dreamed that it was made of blood, not cloth, and I’d pulled it out of the closet that night, in the dark, and stroked and stroked the dry, silky, shining fabric, which was nothing like blood.  Nothing like blood.)  My sneakers would live.  I had dozens of T-shirts and jeans if I decided I wanted to burn something but I wasn’t going to sacrifice a good pair of sneakers if I could help it.

Now, I don’t have a cranberry-red dress, but I have a raspberry-red dress.  I’ve styled it two ways, both based off the book:

 

First, I paired it with nude sandals, to mimic Rae’s bare feet when she wears the dress.  I added the gold cuff bracelet and key necklace because they remind me of the filigree design on the cover of my paperback copy (pictured at the top of the post).

 

This look is more playful.  I wore my much-loved Converse sneakers, to pay homage to Rae’s sneakers in the quote.  I don’t have any cinnamon roll jewelry (Rae is famous for her cinnamon rolls), but I do have an adorable cupcake necklace, perfect for a baker!
