For today’s Remix Rewear Restyle link up, over at Greater Than Rubies, Caitlin has asked us to take part in the May Redress Challenge, which is Reconstruction. I decided to do something a little different.
This is the story of my wedding dress. It began as a plus size wedding gown, which, for unknown reasons, ended up at a local Goodwill store. There, it was discovered by my high school dance instructor, who was hunting for a white dress to wear as a ballroom costume.
She is a talented seamstress, and was able to resize the dress to fit her smaller frame, as well as adding some chiffon to the neckline for extra coverage. She wore the dress during a waltz routine at her in-laws’ 50th Anniversary celebration.
A few years later, I was planning my wedding. I had two ideas for a wedding dress. Either a tea length fit and flare, or a floor length column dress. These Audrey Hepburn costumes were my inspiration:
The second picture reminded me of the dress my teacher had worn. So, I asked if I could try it on, and buy it from her, if it fit. It fit perfectly, as if it had been made for me. With tears in her eyes, she gave it to me, saying she couldn’t charge me for something that was obviously meant for me.
There are things about my wedding that I would change, if I could, but the dress isn’t one of them. It was, is, and will forever, be perfect!

Oh, what a perfect story! I can hear you share it with your daughter and have her beg for it time and time again. You must have had a close relationship with your high school dance instructor; do you guys still keep in touch? Do you still have the dress? Do you think your little one will want to wear it someday?

We were close – she was going to dance as part of my ceremony, but she got sick, so her daughter performed instead. We kept in touch for a long time, but we lost touch about 8 years ago. I DO still have the dress. I’d love for Sweet Potato to wear it one day, but I’m not going to push for it.
