This week The Broke and the Bookish asks for the Top Ten Books I’ve Read So Far This Year. In no particular order, they are:
The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. Catching Fire is my favorite, because everything changes, but I always marathon the series, so I’m only counting them as one book. 😉
The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith (J. K. Rowling). This hard-boiled detective novel reminded me a bit of Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon. I’m looking forward to the sequel, The Silkworm, due out this summer.
The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry. Intriguing and thought provoking. My posts on The Giver and the rest of the Quartet.
Sabriel by Garth Nix. Atmospheric and exciting! My post.
Sunshine by Robin McKinley. McKinley’s world is enthralling! My post.
Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton. Favorite new-to-me read! My post.
Lemony Snicket’s All The Wrong Questions series. Exactly what you’d expect from Snicket – funny and snarky! My post.
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie. One of my favorite Poirot books!
The Blue Castle by L. M. Montgomery. Beautiful romance! My post.
Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. Too stinkin’ cute and completely nostalgic! Review Thursday!
Love your list. I just started rereading The Giver yesterday. I haven’t read it since middle school and the trailer for the movie looks amazing! Have you seen it?

Thanks! I have mixed feelings about The Giver film. On one hand, there are lots of great book-to-film adaptations and this could very well be one of them. On the other hand, Katie Holmes (ugh, I’m not a fan). 😛

I’m also looking forward to the next Robert Galbraith novel! I love a good mystery…so a mystery by the author of Harry Potter…you know I’m going to love it! Also, I love that you included an Agatha Christie (my all time fave)!

Oh, I adore Agatha Christie! My son asked me yesterday if he could read some Poirot, so I directed him to “Jewel Robbery at the Grand Metropolitan”, a SS that isn’t a murder. He’s 8-1/2. 😀

Catching Fire was my favorite of the trilogy as well. You enjoyed The Cuckoo’s Calling? I haven’t read it yet because I DNF’ed The Casual Vacancy so I was worried. I love crime/detective fiction so I should probably try it.
I know you already read it, but here’s my TTT! 🙂

I haven’t tried The Casual Vacancy, but The Cuckoo’s Calling is really good! Cormoran Strike is an interesting anti-hero, and his secretary, Robin, humanizes him beautifully.

Awesome. I need to check it out then!

I’d love to read your thoughts! BTW, I started reading Mockingjay to Bert last night. He says it’s weird to just sit there and listen to me read, but he enjoyed the first chapter. 😉

Haha. I love that you’re kind of forcing him to listen. Looking forward to hearing what he thinks!
I’m sure I’ll post a review when I read it. 🙂

So many books…so little time! Didn’t even know Rowling wrote mystery. Perhaps that’s where I should begin with my Literary Summer Plan #1?

Yeah, she wrote it under a pseudonym – probably because Casual Vacancy wasn’t well received. 😛 If you’re trying to get back into mysteries, The Cuckoo’s Calling is great! It’s fairly dark and heavy though.
For lighter mysteries, I’d go with the Stephanie Plum books. Or you might like the Kelly Flynn series, since you knit: http://www.maggiesefton.com/knitting.html
There’s always Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie!

I’ve been meaning to get into All the Wrong Questions and am now looking even more forward to it.

They are really fun! I read them to my kids, but I would’ve read them anyway. I love that the kids in the book talk about books that they’ve read, but they don’t say the titles, only the plot points. My kids and I had so much fun figuring out what books they were talking about!

You have a nice blog there 🙂 I haven’t read Rowling’s detective novel, but I am currently reading The Maltese Falcon.
I started reading the Anne of Green Gables books last spring. I didn’t realize L.M. Montgomery wrote other books until I started blogging. I really look forward to reading her other works.

Why, thank you!
The Maltese Falcon is great! It’s probably going to be on my Top Ten Classics list in a few weeks. Are you going to participate in that one?
L. M. Montgomery was quite prolific! I used to own most of her books, but I gave a bunch away to a friend’s daughter. I do still have the Anne books (actually 3 copies of Anne of Green Gables), and a first edition of Jane of Lantern Hill. 🙂

I am not sure if I will participate in many top ten lists, but I know that I will make another list at the end of the year.

Sunshine’s one of my all time favorites and HOLY COW there’s a grown up L.M. Montgomery book! Excuse me while I go check out whether my library carries this…. Great list!

XD Have you read all the Anne books? Anne of the Island, Anne of Windy Poplars, and particularly Anne’s House of Dreams are much more grown up. A Tangled Web and Kilmeny of the Orchard are good too.

Wonderful list, and refreshingly full of older titles! I love The Blue Castle. And Tooth and Claw has been on my radar for a while; I’ll check out your reviews of both. Thanks for stopping by The Bookwyrm’s Hoard earlier!

Thanks! I’m not huge on reading brand new books, unless they’re by a favorite author, so, yeah, older titles. 🙂
I found your blog via Don’t Be Afraid of the Dork – I’ll definitely be back! 🙂
