Thoughtful Third Thursday: October 2014

This month’s T3 theme, in honor of Halloween, is Fear Factor: a book that gives / gave you the chills. I’ve chosen The Silkworm by Robert Gailbraith.

The Silkworm is the second Cormoran Strike detective story. It involves the disappearance of author Owen Quine. The book within the book, Quine’s Bombyx Mori, is the really chilling book here.

“Quite an interesting premise. Some of the imagery was arresting. A Gothic fairy tale, a grisly Pilgrim’s Progress.”

Interesting, arresting, Gothic, and grisly don’t even scratch the surface. How about provocative, salacious, grotesque, and macabre?

I don’t know about you, but I can’t get sartorially inspired by gore, so I latched onto the words “Gothic fairy tale”. A quick Google image search brought up this amazing wedding dress, the Cella by Stiltskin’s Spindle:

The pattern is similar to one of the skirts I’m using for 31 Days, 31 Ways, so I built this outfit around it.

Note: It’s Quine’s agent, Elizabeth Tassel, who describes Bombyx Mori as a Gothic fairy tale, so I included my silver tassel necklace as a nod to her. 😉

If you enjoy hard boiled detective stories, The Silkworm is a riveting read. I ploughed through all 455 pages in 4 days, because I couldn’t put it down!

Now it’s your turn! What reading material has given you the creepy crawlies? Link up below and let us know (I made a rhyme that time).

That inspiration dress is uh-mazing! And the pattern of your shirt is, indeed, very similar. Huzzah to you for having something that hits both challenges! I really like that top – has it got ruching at the neckline? It looks so comfy and swingy! I dunno if I’ll ever read your book because I’ve yet to get into the mystery genre, but you do make it sound so intriguing. Maybe in the summer…

(Pssst – I think you meant “shirt” instead of “skirt”, right?)
