It’s been a while since I Geeked Out but I want to make it a monthly feature. My family is in the throes of a Doctor Who marathon so I’m going to do some closet Cosplay of the various companions.
Today’s look is inspired by Rose Tyler:
The basic elements of her style are half-zipped hoodie, graphic tee, flared jeans, sneakers, and copious amounts of eyeliner and mascara (also bleached hair, but I’m not going that far!).
I chose my Marilyn tee because it just seems like something Rose would like. My lip gloss is Burt’s Bees Rose (I told you I’m a geek 😉 ).
Obviously, this is getting linked up with Maricel @ My Closet Catalogue for TARDIS Tuesday!
Ah, Rose! I do have a love/hate relationship with this girl! On one hand, her spunky-ness is so charming and captivating. On the other hand, why fall in love with the Doctor so fully and painfully? Bleh. I guess I’m just too old for sentimentality. Cosplaying her, however, seems like such an easy task, especially how you broke it down; I wonder why I’ve not thought of her for TARDIS Tuesday yet. Thanks for the idea! 🙂

I think it’s important to remember how young Rose was when she met The Doctor. She was only 19, so he was her first love (I don’t believe she ever loved Mickey romantically).

Alright, then I blame the Doctor (or perhaps RTD) for taking advantage, loneliness on the Doctor’s part notwithstanding. Or perhaps I ought to rewatch the Rose episodes again to give it a second chance. Do you find your views changing upon rewatch?

But 9 never took advantage, and 10 was just as heartbroken as Rose when they were separated.
My views definitely change on rewatching. For instance, I HATED Donna in The Runaway Bride when I first saw it. After getting to know the character better and coming to love her, I really enjoyed rewatching that special.

Ha! And yet I thoroughly LOVED Donna even then. I’d be interested to have a discussion with other Whovians about which Companion appealed to them and why. I wonder if age has something to do with it?

Hooray for Rose’s wardrobe. So comfy! Definitely my favorite clothes.

😀 My style leans more toward Clara and Amy, but Rose’s wardrobe lends itself more toward the TARDIS lifestyle (all the running).

I love this SO much!! Well, I have a little tiny bit of a thing for Doctor Who. Eavesdropping on your conversation with Maricel above, Rose is my favorite companion of the New Who era. I think maybe because she was my first and I got to know the Doctor through her? Her immaturity shines through in both the best and worst ways possible and I adored her chemistry with both 9 and 10. Somewhere deep in my blog there is a very long post where I go on ad nauseam analyzing the different companions and the Doctor because I love that stuff and I think that’s what pushes the show into being amazing instead of just great. Also, my personal style is definitely closest to Rose all the way:) minus the copious eyeliner:0).

I agree that the show is at its best when the relationship between the Doctor and his companion(s) is spectacular. I have a hard time choosing favorites, but I love Rose. I’ll have to track down your post!

I found the post you mentioned. I agree with everything you said about Rose, Martha, and Donna!

Where is this blog post, please could you come and leave me a link to it on my blog (that means you have to come and say hi- oh go on, my blog isn’t THAT awful! And I dressed up as Clara!) I’d love to read about it!
I thought I’d HATE Rose before the New Who began. BUT, she won me over very soon after it began. Likewise Donna, Likewise Matt Smith. If we’ve seen the persona elsewhere or before, then we tend to predict what they might be like maybe?
I love your take on Rose. The only one I’ve thought about cosplaying before, is the one with The Wire, where they are dressed in 50’s outfits, or the one with the purple t-shirt but I could totally do this one so thanks for the idea!

I’ve been considering a very loose interpretation of Rose’s 1950s look, but that’s another post. 😉

Ditto what Selah said, Stephanie! Well written and well analyzed. The English teacher/nu-Whovian in me gives you A+ marks! 😀

Thanks to both of you – I am so proud of my obsessive TV watching;). I still haven’t gotten as into seasons five onward (though season 6 was pretty spectacular) – maybe I’m just an RTD fan? shrugs

NOOOOO! You must come over to the Moffat side. Stat! 11 does take some getting used to, especially after the awesomeness that is 10, but I swear Moffat’s Companions and plot lines are far more dense and intricate and provocative than RTD’s.

I couldn’t help but fall for 11 when he acted exactly like Tigger in his first episode. 😀 I love River’s story line, Rory & Amy (not so much Amy alone), and Clara + 11. I’m not convinced Moffat knows how to handle 12 though.

I agree with you – 12 is taking quite some time to find his bearings. D’you think we’ll lose Moffat and keep Capaldi? Or do you think those two will eventually find their sea legs together? And yes to the Tigger comment. ;p

I know I replied on here earlier today but it seems to have disppeared…. If you find a nonsensical comment from me on another post Selah well than…just ignore it. The gist was – I know you are right about Moffat but I can’t help it. The heart wants what the heart wants, lol! Apparently my heart wants goofy, sentimental ridiculousness:0). Season 6 arguably has the best collection of non-stop awesome episodes so I definitely see Moffat’s awesomeness but season 5 did a number on me. I’ve watched it twice and just didn’t like it. I agree with you Selah that I like Rory and Rory and Amy together but did not like Amy alone. It also took me a bit to warm up to 11, adorable tiggerness or not. Haven’t caught any Capaldi episodes yet…

Hmm, Season 5 did have some clunk-y episodes, but I LOVE Vincent and the Doctor and The Lodger. I can’t decide how I feel about Capaldi’s Doctor.

I think the writing and chemistry for the 12 / Clara relationship is off. Maybe now that Jenna has gotten over her snit about Matt Smith leaving it will be better?

Jenna was snitty? I don’t follow the tabloids so I had no idea!

Bert reads a lot of the geek sites so that’s how I heard about it. She was originally leaving before Christmas and then changed her mind.

Love! How have I never thought of doing Rose for TARDIS Tuesday?! I have a new hoodie and everything! I love your interpretation of her!

Why, thank you. 🙂 At first I wasn’t sure about it, since my one and only hoodie isn’t a color Rose usually wore, but I decided the essence of the style was more important than an exact copy.

Definitely! I extra agree, because my hoodie is wine colored, so not cannon either! 😉
