How awful it was . . . the way tiny ghosts of your living children haunted your heart; they could never know, and would hate it if they did, how their growing was a constant bereavement.”

This is so poignant and beautiful but, for me at least, rather inaccurate. But maybe that’s because my earlier memories of my children are tainted.

I certainly don’t feel this way about my kids ALL the time, but I often feel sad that they’re not babies anymore (and then I remember all the things about babyhood that I don’t miss 😛 ). The specific teenager that this quote is referring to is an awful person, so it makes sense that his mom is feeling bereft.

What are your thoughts on this book? I’ve heard mostly negative reviews but I want to love it because of J.K. Rowling.

It’s intricately plotted and well written. I think the negative reviews were because it’s so different from HP – much darker and definitely meant for adults. Since you’ve enjoyed The Cuckoo’s Calling and The Silkworm, I think you’d like this one as well.
