Thoughtful Third Thursday: September 2015

Today’s T3 theme is a FREEBIE. Last Thursday Maricel and I had a comments convo about Jane Austen. Then, while writing my TTT for this week, I rediscovered Whitney’s Jane Austen T3. Jane Austen is my all-time, #1 favorite author ever and it is past time that I dedicate a T3 post to her!

I searched my memory (and Google) for style related quotes from Austen and quickly discovered this:

It would be mortifying to the feelings of many ladies, could they be made to understand how little the heart of man is affected by what is costly or new in their attire; how little it is biased by the texture of their muslin, and how unsusceptible of peculiar tenderness towards the spotted, the sprigged, the mull, or the jackonet. Woman is fine for her own satisfaction alone. No man will admire her the more, no woman will like her the better for it. Neatness and fashion are enough for the former, and a something of shabbiness or impropriety will be most endearing to the latter.
– Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey

At first glance this quote is quite humorous with its witty observations on Regency era men and women, especially as the same sentiments apply to many modern men and women. Reading more carefully, this sentence jumped out and struck me:

Woman is fine for her own satisfaction alone.

Empowering! What a wonderful reminder that when choosing my attire I really only need to dress for myself!

Here is an outfit comprised of some of my very favorite pieces. I added a high belt, because 1) it highlights my hourglass figure, and 2) it’s a nod to the Empire silhouette so fashionable during Austen’s life.

And once again, I feel my T3 offering thoroughly overwrought when compared to yours. Maybe I need to read myself some Austen stat and find my fashion zen place. ;p

I love Austen so much! I’ve always been amazed by how she can craft a funny, clever line and manage to make it ring true on a deeper level at the same time. She is just the best.
