Mini Reviews (8) – The Brothers Grimm Mysteries

Gretel and the Case of the Missing Frog Prints by P.J. Brackston

This is what I was hoping for last year when I read Snow White Red-Handed – a solid cozy mystery set in an enchanting fairy tale world. Gretel (yes, that Gretel) is a great heroine – 35, voluptuous, obsessed with clothes, brilliant, and brave. The mystery was well plotted and took several unexpected turns. Could’ve been 5 stars, but there were a few too many oafish, bumbling male characters.

I’m not quite sure why Brackston wrote a prequel (especially one that takes place right before book #1). Why not just publish this book first? Still, Gretel is fun! If you’re new to this series, start here.

I didn’t enjoy this installment quite as much as the first two. Maybe because I read it in print instead of listening to an audiobook? I love Gretel’s grim (ha!) determination to survive and solve the mystery. I didn’t love the trap she set for the killer at the end.
