Mini Reviews (9) – St. Patrick’s Day

Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland by Tomie dePaola
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
Tomie dePaola wrote this biography for his Irish mother, Flossie Downey dePaola. It’s a perfect book for children as it recounts Partrick’s legendary adventures in easy to understand language and, of course, dePaola’s gorgeous illustrations.

Fin M’Coul, the Giant of Knockmany Hill by Tomie dePaola
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
A witty Irish folktale retold and illustrated by the wonderful dePaola. I love the details of the illustrations (Cucullin’s jacket toggles are trees!). I also love that the real hero of the story is Fin’s wife, Oonagh. She’s quite brilliant!

Jamie O’Rourke and the Big Potato by Tomie dePaola
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
Another Irish folktale, retold in honor of dePaola’s Irish grandfather, Tom Downey. Jamie, the laziest man in all Ireland, catches a leprechaun and makes an odd wish, with hilarious results!

Jamie O’Rourke and the Pooka by Tomie dePaola
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
Jamie, still the laziest man in all Ireland, is back! This time he meets a pooka (a slightly frightening mythic creature) and learns a lesson (maybe).
