A Bibliophile’s Pile (39): Meh

The Scariest Book EverThe Scariest Book Ever by Bob Shea (physical / library)
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Haha, it’s funny, but nothing amazing.

A Reader's Guide Through the Wardrobe: Exploring C.S. Lewis's Classic StoryA Reader’s Guide Through the Wardrobe: Exploring C.S. Lewis’s Classic Story by Leland Ryken (audiobook / library)
My rating: 2.5 of 5 stars

I was hoping for more history about the writing of Lewis’ most famous story. There was some history included, but mostly this was trying to teach me *how* to read the book. It kept veering off into tangents about other children’s fantasy work (usually denigrating it, in order to “prove” Lewis’ superiority). The only part I *really* enjoyed was the argument in favor of publication order. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe loses so much of its wonder if you’ve already read The Magician’s Nephew.

Serafina and the Splintered HeartSerafina and the Splintered Heart by Robert Beatty (audiobook / library / with kids)
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The weakest of the series, by far. The book is exceptionally violent for a children’s book (the first 2 were borderline, this one was 😳). The pacing was off, it felt like 2 or 3 book’s worth of plot squished into a single book.

Seek and Find Classics: Pride and PrejudiceSeek and Find Classics: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (physical / own)
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Short on substance, but *lovely* illustrations.

The Fearsome Foursome (Tales from the Haunted Mansion #1)The Fearsome Foursome by Amicus Arcane (physical / own)
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

It’s a good thing this book is gorgeous and photogenic, because the content is extremely disappointing. Oh well.

The Readaholics and the Falcon Fiasco (Book Club Mystery #1)The Readaholics and the Falcon Fiasco by Laura DiSilverio (physical / library)
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A decent enough Cozy mystery. There were a number of things I didn’t love about it (Ivy may have been Amy-Faye’s friend, but she was a bit unsavory – not that she deserved to be murdered, nicknaming a kid Axie for accident?, and the possibility of a love triangle as we move forward). Honestly, I mainly read it because I want to read the second book, The Readaholics and the Poirot Puzzle, and I don’t like starting with a second book.
