A Bibliophile’s Pile (45): Classics

 Read

The Adventures of Huckleberry FinnThe Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain (audiobook / library)
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Quite the most ridiculous rigamarole of a novel I’ve ever read. I can see why generations of youngsters have enjoyed it, and I think my own children would love Huck’s adventures, but the prolific use of a certain word was incredibly difficult to swallow. I’m all for understanding historical context, but good grief.

Sparkling Cyanide (Colonel Race, #4)Sparkling Cyanide by Agatha Christie (audiobook / library / re-read)
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I didn’t realize before starting that this was a reworking of the Poirot short story, Yellow Iris. I will always prefer Poirot to Colonel Race, but this was still a good book.

King LearKing Lear by William Shakespeare (audiobook / library / physical / own)
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Gracious, I though Othello and Hamlet were depressing, but Lear takes the cake! The only bright spots are Kent and Edgar (brilliantly played by David Tennant in the Arkangel audiobook). December’s Shakespearean choice really needs to be a comedy!!!

Beyond the Valley of Thorns (The Land of Elyon, #2)Beyond the Valley of Thorns by Patrick Carman (audiobook / library / with kids)
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Carman originally “wrote” these books as bedtime stories for his kids, and it shows. The world building and internal “life” of the story is spotty and derivative. Even my 9 year old remarked on various portions reminding her of other books! Tropes on tropes on tropes.

Thank You, JeevesThank You, Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse (audiobook / library)
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Jeeves & Wooster book is always a good idea. The use of a certain word (already overused in Huck Finn) deducts a star.
