TTT: Movies

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is “Movie Freebie”

I’ve never been a stickler for reading the book first. In fact, given that the book is usually better, reading the book first can often ruin an otherwise good movie experience. And a good, or even a bad, movie can lead you to a great book, which can lead you to a great author! So, here’s a list of movies that led me to some of my favorite authors:

Jane Austen

L. M. Montgomery

Suzanne Collins

Suzanne Collins

J. K. Rowling

J. K. Rowling

Agatha Christie

Agatha Christie

Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl

Lemony Snicket

TTT: Dark, Quirky MG

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is “Top Ten ALL TIME Favorite Books Of X Genre (I know, I know. Picking all time faves. I’m MEAN. But I like knowing people’s definitive faves). Can also break it down into sub-genre if that helps?”

In honor of Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday, I give you my Top Ten Dark, Quirky MG reads:

  1. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – Naturally, I have to start with my favorite Roald Dahl book! I also love Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, The BFG, and Danny the Champion of the World. I haven’t read it, but my daughter is a big fan of The Witches.
  2. The Housenapper by Jane Louise Curry – Two words: tiny people! This book was also published as Mindy’s Mysterious Miniature and The Mysterious Shrinking House.
  3. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang series by Ian Fleming and Frank Cottrell Boyce – Fleming and Dahl were contemporaries and frenemies, whose careers overlapped quite a bit, so it’s not surprising that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang reminds me of Dahl (who actually wrote the screenplay for the film version!).
  4. Nooks & Crannies by Jessica Lawson This story reminds me quite a bit of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with various children visiting a mysterious benefactor.
  5. Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling – The first 3 books easily qualify as MG, and you really can’t get much darker or quirkier.
  6. Holes by Louis SacharMy first exposure to Sachar was his delightful Wayside School series, but Holes, with its Dickensian plot, is even more wonderful!
  7. A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket series – Remember earlier when I said you couldn’t get much darker or quirkier than Harry Potter? I lied. Lemony Snicket can get much, much, MUCH darker and quirkier! Both this series and it’s prequel, All the Wrong Questions, are hilariously morose.
  8. The Wollstonecraft Detective Agency series by Jordan Stratford –  Alt history has never been more fun! This series overflows with literary references that make my heart pitter-patter.
  9. Maisie Hitchins series by Holly Webb – I’ve only read the first book, but my daughter adores this series of MG Cozies.
  10. The Incorrigble Children of Ashton Place series by Maryrose Wood – The kids and I have sailed through the first 5 books (the audiobooks, narrated by Katherine Kellgren, are a MUST), and now we are anxiously awaiting the 6th, and final, book!
