I loved Arabian Nights and Frankenstein! But truth be told, I probably wouldn’t have read them if it wasn’t for a course I took in uni. I’ve had tons of the same books sitting on my shelf but I’ve moved around a lot and now I have no idea where they are.

Frankenstein is the one that I can’t remember if I’ve read the whole thing, lol. If I did, it was in highschool, 20+ years ago. Oh no, I hope you find your books!

Practically all of these are on my TBR except for Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer, and Journey to the Center of the Earth. I REALLY need to read Frankenstein because it is referenced quite often and I feel as though I’m missing out on some extra meaning. Great list! 🙂

I didn’t really keep track of my TBR pre-blogging, so I just went with classics that I’ve missed, lol. I read Twenty Thousand a Leagues Under the Sea in school, but didn’t get to Journey. I was never assigned Twain in school, and he’s mean about Jane Austen, so I haven’t gotten around to him. 😂 But, he’s a quintessential American author, so I feel like I should read him.
I think I read Frankenstein in highschool, but I can’t remember for sure. It’s definitely referenced a lot.

I believe the ‘rents read Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer to us on long car trips…but maybe you were already in college by then…

That must’ve been when I was vacant. 😉

Oh wow, most of these are stories I grew up with! Maybe in a more kid-friendly form, but my bedtime stories definitely included Arabian Nights, Ivanhoe, Arthur, Don Quixote, anything by Jules Verne, Huck Finn & Tom Sawyer. The others I either read at school – Homer was compulsory for Classical Studies – or because I wanted to (Frankenstein). Here’s my TTT

Yes, part of the reason most of these are here is because I’ve read the kid version but not the original. Homer wasn’t required for me, I had to read Plato and Sophocles. Honestly, I think the theme here is that these are marketed towards boys, so I missed them as a young adult. I was reading Austen and the Brontes.

A lot of these books have been on my TBR for a while too! I hope you enjoy them when you get to them. 🙂

I hope so too! Fingers crossed!

Ooh. Great to see all these classics on your list.
I finally started Don Quijote a few days ago. I got a Kindle version that I can read on my phone, a few pages at a time in between stuff. I’m about one-tenth in and am enjoying it so far.

I’m probably going to tackle most of these via audiobook, so i can listen while doing housework, etc.Good luck with Don Quixote!

Don Quixote is often called the first novel, and Huck Finn is supposed to be the great American novel, so I kind of feel obligatory at least try them!

Ooo! I have that Joan of Arc of book…and it’s also been on my TBR forever! I need to stop pushing it back in favor of fresh TBR books. 😛

I find it fascinating that Twain wrote a book about Joan of Arc!

Ha, some of those, not only have I not read, but I don’t intend to!
I’m like you about Frankenstein and can’t recall if I read it in my school days or not. I did though read it when I was in my 50s and really it was almost a shock because I’ve seen so many of the movie productions. I found the monster to not be nearly as likeable in the book.

Haha! Part of the reason I want to read these (at least give them a chance) is because I feel like my classics reading is skewed toward romance and away from adventure stories. I want to at least try some more adventures.

Good for you, Selah! Sets a good example for the twins too.

Haha, my kids aren’t twins. They’re 3 years apart, but people often mistake them for twins IRL. 👫

Oops, thanks. Sorry to the kids – especially the older one. 🙂

I’ve been re-arranging my bookshelves and have found several books that I haven’t gotten around to reading yet, in spite of the fact that I’m always buying/borrowing/begging (no stealing yet) new books.
They include:
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
Gold by Chris Cleave
Big Breasts, Wide Hips by Mo Yan
A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson
Townie by Andre Dubus
Man Crazy by Joyce Carol Oates
Safron Kitchen by Yasmin Crowther
City of Light by Lauren Belfer
Heir to the Glimmering World by Cynthia Ozick
The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri
And probably 10 or so more. I just have to been in the mood to read certain books, I guess.

I haven’t read any of those! I saw the mini-series of Pillars of the Earth, which I really enjoyed. 😊
