My friend Stefani @ Caught Read Handed has recently started reviewing picture books. Her lovely reviews inspired me to proclaim August “Children’s Book Month” here on A Bibliophile’s Style.
Up first is a childhood favorite: Cheese, Peas, and Chocolate Pudding by Betty Van Witsen. My mom used to read this humorous story to me when I was little. It’s a great take on the classic “picky eater” syndrome that so many children suffer from.
I love the cadence of the repeated lines:
Cheese, peas, and chocolate pudding. Cheese, peas, and chocolate pudding. Every day, the same old thing: cheese, peas, and chocolate pudding.
Will the little boy ever eat anything new?
Unfortunately, this adorable book is out of print. My local library has it in a story collection called Let’s Hear a Story: 30 Stories and Poems for Today’s Boys and Girls (this is the version that my mom read). The collection includes lovely illustrations by Dagmar Wilson:
You can also read the complete text here, although it is misattributed and mistyped. 😦
Other great picky eater books are Bread and Jam for Frances by Russell Hoban and Gregory the Terrible Eater by Mitchell Sharmat.
T3 is coming up in 2 weeks! This month is a freebie – pick your current read or anything you love! I’ll be doing a children’s book. 🙂
this was one of my all-time favorite books/stories growing up

I had a craving for chocolate pudding recently and I remembered this book. Cheese, peas and chocolate pudding are some of my favorite comfort foods…yum!

It’s such a cute story! My kids are older now, but one of them is still a picky eater 🤦🏻♀️
